The Vendors Property History
We moved here from Bracknell, Berks, in 1986, due to a move with my work. My husband was a civil engineer, moving from contract to contract, and when we were offered a move we jumped at it, and took the opportunity to make a permanent family base.
We have found Yaxley incredibly convenient. The A1 is just down the road, giving access all over the country, and commuting by train into London is easy. Bus services are good to both Peterborough (bus stop just a matter of yards away) and Cambridge; there is a good Co-op supermarket in the village, and there is a modern shopping centre at Serpentine Green, with Tesco and high street names, as well as Aldi nearby.
Health Centre, dentist, Library, vet, are all in the village, and St. Peter's Church is thriving and lively. Yaxley Football Club and various children's football clubs provide for all ages, and there are outdoor pitches as well as tennis courts; Yaxley Bowling Club attracts many people, walking in the fens is great, and there is a growing Cycling Club. There is a choice of gyms and swimming pools within a few miles of Yaxley. You can do yoga, and pilates, Zumba; there is a Flower Club, allotments, WI, and Mothers' Union; Welcome Club and Age-well Club for the older population, and numerous groups aimed at mums and babies.
Yaxley is one of the villages claiming to be the largest in the UK, and it has certainly grown in the time we have lived here. There are three Primary schools, assorted nurseries, preschools, and out-of-school clubs. Secondary schools are in neighbouring villages or in Peterborough.
The house chose us - it was bigger than we were looking for, and in need of so much work! The right-hand side, as you go through the gate, had been knocked down and re-built on the same footprint by the previous owners, and the room at first floor level (wonderful views across the fields) joining the two houses together had been built, but the left-hand side had nothing done except new windows and a new roof. We camped out in what is now the annexe, and the upstairs that side of the house, for the first winter, with a ten-year old, a small baby, a nanny, and a golden retriever puppy, while the builders sorted out the rest of the house.
We have found it a very adaptable family house, altering its uses as the children have grown. The annexe has been let out to boost family income; been a teenage hang-out; provided guest accommodation when we used two rooms in the house as offices; and housed our wedding-dress shop. It would also, of course, provide very comfortable accommodation as a granny flat, or for a young adult who has still not left home or for a carer or nanny
The garden has taken us from sandpit and swing, through football goals and sleepovers in tents, to decking, croquet and a hot tub. It is nice and private, and very sheltered by the wall. We have not missed having a "front garden" at all.
Since the kitchen extension was built in 2006, the house has been great for parties, and we have held various Church events in the garden over the years.
We have rarely found the pub next door to be a nuisance; there is a boot sale there once a month in the summer, which is great fun, and the Scouts Firework Display in November. There is another pub in the village, two restaurants, several take-aways, a tea shop and two Services Clubs.
