We're constantly reminded of how important first impressions are. Whether you're at a job interview, going on a date or countless other scenarios, each of us recognise that the first few moments of an encounter can go on to define how the future will unfold, for better or for worse.

When it comes to viewing property, this continues to hold true. Within 27 minutes on average, a prospective buyer will have made up their mind and decided that either this will be the home for them, or that the search will continue elsewhere.

Of course we recommend therefore, that if you are selling your home, try to make a strong first impression. If possible, leave a driveway clear for the person viewing your home to park easily. If you have a garden, this should be well presented as this will likely be the first part of your property that viewers set foot in. But, what does your front door say about you and your home?

The reality is, that for only a few hours of DIY, you can really make a huge difference to the appearance of your home. There are a few tips from experts around the country, the most obvious of which is that choosing colours that are not likely to have broad appeal is not a good strategy if you're looking to sell, so generally conservatism and traditional approaches are going to have the best results.

Those living by the sea should consider colours that relate to the ocean; this is after all an appealing factor of your home, and it pays to remind your viewers that they're near the sea! By contrast, those living in rural settings are often better advised to have a bare wooden door, which makes perfect sense given the natural environment that the home sits in.

Traditional colours such as dark greys, deep blues and muted greens can really be a classy approach, and are likely to have wide appeal due to their understated but grand impressions. Of course, a UPVC door can look quite impersonal and doesn't add a great deal of character, but new chalk-based paints may be the answer to take your property's outside appearance to the next level.

Whatever your goal, taking time to present your property in its best light can make a great difference to how it feels to live in your home, not just for visitors but for yourself too. Give your front door the attention it deserves, and when the time comes, make the Smart Move with us!
